The Mar Menor, the "minor sea," is a shallow saltwater lagoon on Spain's southeastern coast, and it had just surrendered four or five tons of dead fish to its beaches, suffocated in water that could no longer hold enough oxygen to keep them alive. Roughly 70,000 people ringed all seventy kilometers of its shoreline to demand it be saved. A little over a year later, Spain gave the Mar Menor something no other ecosystem in Europe possessed: the legal right to exist.]]></description>
