In 2019, a weather station in Hà Tĩnh registered 43.4 degrees Celsius — 110 Fahrenheit — the hottest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Vietnam. The record stood for four years before a station in neighbouring Nghệ An broke it in the extraordinary May of 2023. That is roughly how Hà Tĩnh works: a province of about 1.6 million people, squeezed into a strip you can drive across in under an hour, that keeps turning up at the extreme end of the national story.
