It was just after six in the morning on the first Sunday of October, and inside a cluster of Murcia nightclubs the night was winding down. Then a fire started on the first floor, and within a short time thirteen people were dead. Many of them were young, and many had come from far away, nationals of Colombia, Ecuador, and Nicaragua who had made lives in this Spanish city. It was the deadliest nightclub fire Spain had seen in more than three decades, and much of what made it deadly had been flagged, in writing, long before that morning.
