The light in the name was never a metaphor. Alicante enjoys some of the most generous sunshine in Europe, hundreds of clear days a year, and light is the one raw material every filmmaker needs and none can manufacture. So when the regional government of Valencia set out in the 2000s to build a film studio that could pull international productions to Spain, they built it here on the coast, and they called it Ciudad de la Luz, the City of Light. For seven years the cameras rolled. Then, in a courtroom sense, someone found the switch and turned the whole city off.
