For two days in September 1936, a wounded man lay alone on the sand of this bay, and the villagers who gathered on the shore were forbidden to help him. His name was Raoul Villain, and he had come to the remote north-east corner of Ibiza to disappear. The bay he chose was then a backwater without so much as a road into the valley, a wide sweep of pale sand between wooded headlands. Today children paddle in the same shallows, unaware of the ghost the beach keeps.
